Some of today’s vehicles don’t come with a spare and instead may be equipped with run-flat tires. Manufacturers do this to reduce weight, improve fuel efficiency, and provide more cargo space.

Run-flat technology is designed to help keep you in control even after losing all or most of the air in your tire. Like standard tire technology, run-flat tires do require air pressure to maintain peak performance. What isn’t required is a spare in your trunk or attached to the underside of your vehicle.

Some run-flat tires can be driven without air for up to 50 miles at up to 50 miles per hour — just enough to get to your local Les Schwab for a repair or replacement.

    While run-flat tires are built to stay rigid when deflated, they still take damage the farther you drive after a puncture. With the reinforced sidewalls on run-flat tires, it’s possible to drive upwards of 50 miles at no more than 50 MPH when deflated. However, driving far can damage the tire beyond repair.


    As long as there is no sidewall damage, run-flat tires may be repairable. However, even some damage outside the sidewall can ruin a run-flat tire beyond repair.


    What run-flat tires deliver in safety, can be lost in comfort. Overall, run-flat tires can deliver a stiffer, less comfortable ride. Additionally, they can create more noise inside the vehicle.


    Some sizes and tread options for passenger vehicles are not easily available and may require special orders.


    Run-flat tires help keep you in control in the event of a sudden loss of tire pressure. If you drive a performance or sports car, run-flat tires offer added safety when cornering or traveling at high speeds. Some of today’s vehicles do not have a spare tire, making run-flat tires an option.
