Some people call them snow tires while others call them winter tires. They are the same thing. Whatever name you prefer, a true set of snow or winter tires will have specialized tread that stays flexible in freezing temperatures to improve traction and keep you in control. Look for tires marked with the Three Peak Mountain Snowflake (3PMSF) icon, indicating they meet rigorous winter performance standards.

Studded tires have lightweight, small metal spikes (studs) that are staggered and inserted across the tread inside 1/8″ pinholes. These studs protrude slightly from the rubber tread surface, helping break through packed snow and ice-covered roads to give you better traction. However, studded tires may be restricted or banned in some areas due to potential road damage. Find your state and regional studded tire restrictions.

Yes, if you regularly face snow or ice covered roads, winter tires are essential. Look for tires with the Three Peak Mountain Snowflake (3PMSF) icon, which ensures they’ve been tested for severe winter conditions. These tires stay flexible in temperatures below 40º F, giving you added grip on snow and ice when compared to all-season tires.

For maximum safety and traction, it’s important to install winter tires on all four wheels, not just the front or back. Mixing winter tires with regular tires can create handling issues, especially when braking or cornering, and increase the risk of losing control. For balanced grip and stability, always equip your vehicle with a full set of winter tires.
